The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos was founded on May 12th of 1551. It’s the first University from Peru and the older from America. There are 40000 students in its 52 Professional Academic Schools allocated in 20 Faculties dedicate to six areas of the knowledge: Health, Humanities, Social Sciences, Basic Sciences, Engineering and Economic-Business Studies which are in three campus: Medicina Veterinaria, Medicina and Farmacia y Bioquímica and the University Campus that houses the other 17 Faculties.
The Plans of Studies can be consulted on the web page of each Faculty, and/or in the Registration Web page in the section Información Académica you select the Facultad, in Programa the EAP (Professional Academic School), then Estudios Generales and the last Plan de Estudios. If you choose subjects of Masters or other programs, we have to coordinate beforehand because they change each semester.
If there would be some change in the professor or schedules allocation of the subjects they will be published a pair of weeks before initiating the semester. When the foreign students arrive in Peru you will register the current subjects at your destiny Faculty although you take subjects from other one.
As a foreign student you will be able to enrol and obtain a Certificate of Studies with the listing of the subjects studied and its corresponding qualifications at the end of the semester. If qualifications are not required, the student must indicate it before the beginning of the semester. It is recommended to follow 3 or 4 subjects by semester.
The foreign students will be able to accede to a library card that identifies them as students of San Marcos, it serves to enter at the University Campus and accredits you have the same rights of our regular students to access to the services of the libraries and the different departments of the university during their stay: Internet, transportation into the campus, gym, swimming pool, university clinic, and centres of social, cultural and academic activities.

HEALTH INSURANCE: It is recommended that foreign students have an international health insurance during their stay.



Peru is located in South America, below the Equatorial Line and above Tropic of Capricorn.
Weather: Peru has different kinds of micro climates because of its eight ecologic regions, which can be perceived in routes less than 2 hours.
Between March and June we are in autumn, begins the cold. Between June and September it is the winter, having temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees with rain falls. At the end of September it initiates the spring until December. The months of January to March, when the students are on vacations, it is summer, time to go to beaches.
If you decide to travel to provinces you have to bear in mind that the weather changes. In the Mountain range it is necessary to wear warm and impermeable clothes for rains, whereas in the Jungle the weather is hotter, with strong sun and possible rains. It is recommended to be vaccinated against the yellow fever if you decide to go to the Jungle.
Currency exchange: There is Change Houses in the main Avenues to exchange money in Lima. It is recommended not to change in the streets by security. The official currency in Peru is the “nuevo sol”.
Roughly, a dollar is equal to 3,00 new suns (1 US$ = 3,00 nuevos soles) and an 1 euro is equal to 4,00 new suns (1 Euro = 4,00 nuevos soles).

  • Accommodation: The prices are different according to the place and the type of lodging. In the host families (Peruvian family) where can get an individual room and including breakfasts the price is between US$ 170 and US$ 220 per month. Also, there is the possibility of renting a flat and the price will depend on the characteristics, space and comforts of the place, you can check the web to look for it, bearing in mind that the price doesn’t include the services. The districts near University Campus are: San Miguel, Pueblo Libre, Jesús María, Magdalena. A little far: Surco, San Isidro and Miraflores, they are some of the most expensive districts but also modern, near to malls and centres of entertainment.
  • Food: The cost of a lunch in the university is 5,00 nuevos soles roughly, being able to spend 15,00 nuevos soles by alimentation in a day, which to the month makes an average of US$ 150.
  • Local Transport: A bus ride costs 1,20 nuevos soles, the taxis do not have taximeter reason why it is necessary to agree the price according to the distance of the route with the  drivers. For short routes the cost is 6,00 nuevos soles and for long routes the cost is 12,00 nuevos soles in average.
  • Study material: Photocopies are cheap in Lima however books are expensive. We consider an amount of US$ 50,00 on average.
  • Entertainment: There are diverse chains of cinemas. In San Miguel the price of the ticket is of 10,50 nuevos soles and in Surco it costs 16,00 nuevos soles. A ticket to the theatre costs around 30,00 nuevos soles, although there are tariffs for students. Go to dance can cost 30,00 nuevos soles roughly, according to place and consume of drinks.

A foreign student requires US$ 500 a month on the average to live in Lima.
